KOUNKUEY DESIGN INITIATIVE is currently seeking a design intern to add to our growing team in Los Angeles, CA. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated and creative self-starter to work directly with under-resourced communities throughout Southern California on community-driven development. The position is based in our downtown Los Angeles office; there will be opportunities to accompany staff to projects throughout Los Angeles, the Eastern Coachella Valley, and other areas in Southern California.

Job Description:

The Design Intern will work closely with the Design, Planning, and Community Departments to support our participatory design process, economic and social development programs, design of parks, temporary installations and affordable housing projects, and build of temporary installations on various public space projects in the Southern California region. The Design Intern will support project managers on design, research, build and community organizing projects and campaigns to transform vacant land, create new parks, design affordable housing campuses, and improve transportation infrastructure. The Design Intern will also assist in the development of new projects addressing homelessness, schoolyards, climate change, and other topics.

The Design Intern will be expected to work from our downtown Los Angeles office full-time. This is a paid internship and the pay will be increased if the student has a federal work study award.


• Undergraduate or graduate-level coursework in Landscape Architecture or related field
• Strong commitment to social justice
• Excellent writing and analytical abilities
• Strong knowledge of AutoCAD, Adobe Create Suite, and Rhino
• Fabrication or graphic design experience a plus
• Spanish language skills a plus
