kibera green street

The Kibera Green Streets (KGS) Project reimagines urban space and government-community partnerships within the challenging development context—and topographies—of Kibera. Born from a collective response to infrastructure developments that threatened local community assets, KGS utilizes green street principles to create a multifunctional, access-oriented public space managed by the community.

context

Site before intervention.
In 2021, proposed road developments by the Kenyan Urban Roads Authority (KURA) posed a threat to the KPSP05 site’s community projects and assets. The Kibera Public Space Network, Kibera Action Group (KAGO), and KDI proposed an alternative—transforming an area too steep for roads into Kibera’s first green street. This solution not only preserved community assets but also enhanced access and usability, turning a potential loss into a significant communal gain.

process

Co-design workshop.
The project kicked off with a robust community engagement process. KDI and community partners negotiated with KURA, leveraging KDI’s design and engineering expertise to redefine the role of roads for residents. This collaboration replaced the original road plan with a multi-beneficial green street, turning a dangerous and unusable space into a safe, functional area. Detailed access studies shaped the design, ensuring that the new pathways, fully realized through complete staircases, would be comfortable and secure for all users.

Special thanks to the Buro Happold Water team and the GDI Hub for their significant engineering and inclusion inputs, which were instrumental in shaping the project’s success.

solution

Local construction team.
The design of the KGS features several new community-managed amenities, including safe pedestrian pathways, 2 new businesses—a salon and a washing service, improved street lighting, a playground, 10 new trees, and a new drainage channel designed to safely manage the 100-year flood event. These elements are integrated into the green street to provide a pedestrian-friendly environment that supports social gatherings and economic opportunities, enhancing both perceived and physical safety in the area.

impact

The completed green street provides a multi-benefit pedestrian walkway.
Since its completion, the KGS has significantly impacted the community by improving pedestrian connectivity and safety, fostering social interactions, and boosting local economies. The project stands as a compelling example to KURA and other stakeholders of the benefits of integrating inclusive public spaces within infrastructure planning. It showcases how urban planning can be both holistic and community-focused, creating sustainable urban environments that meet the needs of all residents.
