Research Principal
Mathews is a research principal at the KDI's Nairobi office. Mathews is a cultural and design anthropologist working at the intersection of research and social design for environmental and infrastructure justice. He has doctoral training in applied cultural anthropology and over ten years of ethnographic research experience. He is also a courtesy faculty at the University of South Florida, where he advances his anthropological work and mentorship on the convergence of design research and environmental justice. Before joining KDI, Mathews was head of research at KUNGU LABS and a Senior Research Scientist at the National Museums of Kenya. He is the winner of the 2023 Wesley W. Horner Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
